An old friend exploring new challenges

On 4 December 2017, we started work on converting a former search and rescue vessel of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) into a fire-fighting boat.

The modifications carried out on the 27.5 metre-long SAR vessel “Vormann Steffens” comprised the complete renewal of the propulsion system together with the steering gear, the automation and communication systems, a newly built bridge, signal mast and fire-fighting container with working platform, the adjustment of the stern slipway to accommodate a small lifeboat, the enhancement of the existing fire-fighting system as well as re-painting and classification for international shipping.

Precisely eight months later, on 4 August 2018, the Hanseatic City of Rostock took delivery of the new fire-fighting boat as part of the celebrations marking the 110th anniversary of the Rostock Fire Service, and together with the godmother Babette Caffier, the vessel was christened “Albert Wegener”.

The “Albert Wegener” will soon be heading for its intended area of deployment, the waters of Rostock Port and national coastal waters.
